Taking the long view

Seattle"This bus has been on the road now for 74 years actually," said U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, at an event in Seattle. "In 1935, Franklin Delano Roosevelt wanted to have universal health care for this country. It was part of the Social Security Act in 1935. The people who defeated it were organized medicine and the insurance industry. Big surprise, right? And, actually, organized labor wasn't very hot on it at that point.

"Now we've come down the road and a lot of people have tried it again and again, but we are going to have a national health care plan in 2009. A lot of things are coming together that are going to make this thing happen."
